CALL FOR PAPERS

THINKING ABOUT LAW AND VIOLENCE IN THE COLOMBIAN POST-CONFLICT
WITH JEAN AND JOHN COMAROFF

October 25 and 27, 2017
Universidad de los Andes
Bogotá, DC, Colombia

Deadline for abstracts: July 15, 2017

Professors Jean and John Comaroff will be visiting Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, DC, Colombia) from October 25 to 27, 2017. To celebrate their work, the Ph.D. in Law (https://derecho.uniandes.edu.co/es/cursos-programas/escuela-de-posgrados/doctorado) and the Legal Theory Department of the School of Law, the M.A. in Peacebuilding (https://paz.uniandes.edu.co), and the Revista de estudios sociales of the Universidad de los Andes ((https://revestudsoc.uniandes.edu.co/index.php/en/) are organizing the Workshop “Thinking Law and Violence in the Colombian Post-Conflict with Jean and John Comaroff” (October 25 and 27, 2017).
The Workshop aims at sparking a multidisciplinary reflection, from the perspective of Professors Comaroff’s work, on the challenges posed by the implementation of the Peace Agreement between the Government of Colombia and the FARC-EP, and on the emergence of crime as a central preoccupation in the context of Colombia’s post-conflict. We are inspired by their original reflections on violence, law and (dis)order in post-colonial contexts. We believe their work, although mainly developed in response to the aftermath of apartheid in South Africa, offers a productive approach to the challenges Colombians face in the post-peace agreement phase, especially in terms of the ways in which we think about violence, order and crime, justice, and truth.

The organizers warmly invite the submission of paper proposals. Possible topics for discussion include, but are not restricted to:

The Colombian experience of transitional justice
Structural critiques of transitional justice and their implications for Colombia
Race and ethnicity in the Colombian transition
Crime and policing in Colombia after the Peace Agreement
Post-demobilization armed non-state actors
Criminal prosecution and state-building in the context of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace
Memory, truth, and the implementation of the Colombian Truth Commission
Law, (dis)order, and “territorial peace”
Legal fetishism and  the politics of rights after the Peace Agreement
Post-conflict economies in the implementation of the Peace Agreement
Legal ethnography in post-conflict settings.

Abstracts should be sent to Julieta Lemaitre and Esteban Restrepo from the Universidad de los Andes School of Law, at jlemaitr@uniandes.edu.co and erestrep@uniandes.edu.co, no later than July 15, 2017. Abstracts will be selected by Jean Comaroff, John Comaroff, Julieta Lemaitre, and Esteban Restrepo. The decision on which papers were selected for presentation at the Workshop will be announced by July 30, 2017.

The first draft of the papers to be presented at the Workshop is due on October 10, 2017.

The Revista de estudios sociales of Universidad de los Andes (https://revestudsoc.uniandes.edu.co/index.php/en/) will publish in issue N° 67 (January-March 2019) a dossier with papers presented at the Workshop that meet their editorial guidelines. Those interested in publishing a paper in the dossier on the topics mentioned above, but not interested in participating in the Workshop, can directly send their contribution to Revista de Estudios Sociales (for more information on this submission see https://revestudsoc.uniandes.edu.co/index.php/es/convocatoria).

When submitting an abstract please bear in mind that, unfortunately, the organizers cannot provide any funding for participants in the Workshop.
